1915: The Enemy Within

‘1915: The Enemy Within’ is a short film written by and starring Neptune Class at Christ Church School, North Shields.

In this film the children at Christ Church reflect on a wave of hypervigilance and ‘nationalism’ which swept through the North Shields in May 1915. The shops and residences of so-called ‘aliens’ – Germans and other foreigners, their families and those married to them, were targeted in a night of riotous violence.

The children learned that identifying the ‘enemy’ of our own prejudices is far more important than singling out those around us who are a bit different!
