Welcome to Archaeology Gastronomy. Here, with the help of ’41 Feasts’, we seek out Ancient Recipes, attempt to cook them and share the results with the world!

Today we try Chicken Stew With Dark Beer

This recipe is modified from Vikingars Gästabud (The Viking Feast), and is for four servings.

1 chicken, about 2 to 2-1/2 lbs.
3-4 carrots
3 yellow onions
1 turnip, about 1 lb.
1 & 1/2 teaspoon salt
Dash black pepper
1 bottle (12 oz) dark beer

Chop the chicken into pieces.

Peel and cut the vegetables into bite size chunks.

Fry the chicken in butter for around 5 minutes on each side.

Season with salt and pepper and place in a pot. Add the vegetables, thyme and beer.

Let simmer for around 15 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

Why not try serving the dish with bread.
