Underwater Archaeology: Diving into Durham

Mr. Gary Bankhead is a post-graduate student at Durham University. He is trained in water rescue and employs these diving skills in exploring the River Wear in the heart of Durham City.

Gary has recovered more than 3,000 artefacts from the murky depths of the river. Of particular interest to him in his research are a selection of Medieval cloth seals.

Ultimately, his research will allow for comments to be made on trade networks, fashion choices and disposable incomes of those indirectly or directly linked to the Durham wool and cloth industries.
