When the autumn winds a-blow and the blood moon hangs up high, they say ol’ Yella Eye roams. In the woods of the back country the crisp of leaves and bones underfoot. Is he a man, a wolf or a kai-yoat? Dunno. He’s my brother anyhow, and i set on the porch of evenings and listen for his howl. He ain’t never hurt nobody I seen.

Sometimes the hunters come when he howls too long and too loud. They talk about monster and spirits. But they ain’t know him like I do. They ain’t know he saved my life many a time. A nip or two ain’t nothing, though when you’re staring down the things in the woods, as he drags ya back to the cabin through the leaves.

That bear ain’t stood no chance as Yella Eye was on two legs and crushed its shoulders in his paws. Sometimes when he looks more like a man he whimpers and looks at me with eyes sorely sad and sorry. And I pat him on the shoulder and give him his meat (he likes it raw of course). I ain’t know how to feel about that.

But I ain’t dumb neither. I know one day when he gets loose he’ll rip somebody sore. I’m gettin older and he is not. Some day I won’t be strong enough to handle ol Yella Eye, and when that happens the town will come. There was the year that little girl got caught in the tree. Yella Eye went to help her and got her good with his claws, and when the little miss talked she ain’t know no better. Big scary monster helped me out of the tree, while she’s bleeding and sobbin’. Oh, yeah, it happened in them back woods.

Some day they’ll stop saying Yella Eye ain’t real.

They’ll stop wondering where he’s at.
